On June 10, 2023, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) UMS Student Chapter, in collaboration with the Geology Club, organized a highly informative technical talk on "Wellbore Instability - Geological Approach' as part of the Geo-Petroleum Technical Talk Series. The event took place from 9am to 11:30am and was attended by 49 students specializing in oil and gas engineering and geology.
The invited speaker for the event was Muhammad Nizam Md Zin, an esteemed expert in geomechanics and pore pressure from Geoscience Solutions, Petronas Exploration. With years of experience in the petroleum industry, Mr. Nizam delivered an insightful presentation, shedding light on the fundamental concepts of geomechanics and its application in the field of rock mechanics within the petroleum industry,
The primary objective of the speaker was to provide an overview of geomechanics, giving the attendees a comprehensive understanding of this interdisciplinary field. Mr. Nizam shared his knowledge on the application of geomechanics and rock mechanics in the exploration and production of petroleum resources: He highlighted the significance of geomechanical model building for wellbore stability analysis, a crucial aspect in ensuring safe and efficient drilling operations.
Throughout the talk, attendees had the opportunity to gain insights into the real- world challenges faced by geoscientists and engineers in dealing with wellbore instability. They also learned about the importance of considering geological factors when analyzing wellbore stability, enabling them to develop a more holistic approach in their future careers
The event successfully accomplished its objectives, providing students with valuable knowledge and practical perspectives in the field of geomechanics. By organizing such technical talks, SPE UMS SC and the Geology Club aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry, equipping students with the necessary skills and understanding to tackle the challenges in the oil and gas sector.
The Geo-Petroleum Technical Talk Series has become a platform for students to interact with industry experts, fostering professional growth and enhancing their understanding of the latest advancements in the field. The success of this second installment of the series has paved the way for future collaborations and similar events, ensuring that students remain well-informed and prepared for their future endeavors in the petroleum industry.
